Besides Ballfields: Natural Surface Trails as Indispensable Infrastructure
In Pennsylvania and beyond, trails are a powerful community asset. They provide access to year-round activity, build skills, support mental health, and connect people. Yet trails aren’t prioritized in the same way as fields, courts, or gyms, and can be an afterthought in recreation master plan. Local recreation facilities are fantastic spaces for developing Natural Surface Trails (NSTs) as they are often more affordable than graded and machined surface trails and can offer users with a quick and local recreation experience. This session will explore what NSTs are and how they differ from machine graded trails; their indispensable value to a community; and how to get started planning, designing, and building NSTs in your community.
